Last year, we got to marvel at some amazing wedding dresses adorned by various celebrities, which inspired brides to come up with their unique styles.
And as a wedding planner, I got to see a lot of these incredible wedding dresses and the impact they had.
I’m interested to find out what this year has in store, which is why I’ve scoured the internet to look for current wedding dress styles and come up with the top wedding dresses for 2022.
Corset Wedding Dresses
Throughout history, corsets have been an important aspect of women’s fashion. But people have mostly worn them as undergarments. However, in recent years, there has been an upward trend in exposed corsets.
The number of women preferring corset wedding dresses is on the rise, and understandably so. Corset bridal dresses are elegant, and there is no sign of the trend slowing down in 2022.
Pros
A corseted gown will accentuate your curves, giving you a more feminine look.
Corsets improve your posture by holding your back straight, making you look elegant and well-poised.
Corset wedding gowns are available in different styles, from satin to tulle to lace. You can also get them in various silhouettes, from mermaid gowns to princess gowns.
Cons
These dresses come with a certain level of discomfort, especially if they are tied too tight. If comfort on your wedding day is important, then a corset dress is not the best option for you.
You cannot wear a corset dress if you are pregnant.
Corset wedding dresses are difficult to put on and remove. You will need someone else who knows how to work up the laces to help you with dressing and undressing.
Short Wedding Dresses
Short wedding dresses are slowly taking center stage in casual and destination wedding ceremonies. But not every bride would prefer a short wedding dress. Here are some pros and cons to help you decide if this dress style is right for you.
Pros
Short dresses are less expensive compared to the traditional long ones.
They provide unrestricted mobility. It is easier for you to dance, or get in and out of vehicles in a short dress than when wearing a long, heavy ball gown.
You can wear the dress again at other functions such as cocktail parties, as people do not associate short white dresses with weddings, unlike the long ones.
Cons
Short dresses are casual, therefore not ideal for a formal wedding, no matter how exquisite they look.
A short wedding dress goes against the tradition and most people, especially your family and friends, are likely to object to your decision to wear one.
Even though short dresses are growing in popularity, not a lot of bridal options are available. You would have to visit one too many wedding shops to get one that fits your style.
Two-piece wedding dresses
Two-piece wedding dresses are unconventional in every aspect, the epitome of changing times.
There are several options available for two-piece wedding dresses, for example, a skirt and a crop top, a long dress with a detachable skirt, or a jumpsuit and a skirt. Not forgetting the pantsuit.
For the unconventional bride, here are the pros and cons of a two-piece outfit:
Pros
They are very convenient, as you can have a long luxurious gown while walking down the aisle, and be in an elegant and comfy short dress at the reception.
They save money as you do not have to buy two separate wedding dresses.
These outfits are compatible with most bridal accessories, such as veils and headpieces.
Cons
Some variations of two-piece dresses may be inappropriate, which may cause friction if you are from a religious or traditional family.
You will not have many color options to choose from. For them to look bridal, two-piece wedding dresses need to be in specific colors, like white or ivory.
How To Choose Your Wedding Dress
It is every bride’s dream to be the center of attention on their wedding day. You achieve this by having the perfect wedding dress.
But finding the right dress can be an uphill task, given the variety of styles, such as the ones I’ve discussed above, available. The overall process requires proper planning and patience.
So how do you go about it?
First, you need to do proper research. This is how you discover the current wedding dress styles available in the market. Go through wedding magazines, explore the internet to get inspiration, or even seek help from professional wedding consultants.
Define your body shape. Knowing your body shape will help you choose a dress that compliments your figure. For instance, if you are busty, you will want a dress that will support your top, like a corset dress. If you are petite, consider dresses with vertical embellishments or plunging necklines to create the illusion of height.
Know your style. Choose a wedding dress that will bring out your personality. But style will also depend on factors such as your wedding venue and theme. For example, if it's a beach wedding, a casual look is more appropriate.
You need to make a budget for your dress so that even while trying on dresses, you will try those that fit your budget. Also, remember to include all your wedding accessories in this budget.
Consider where and when you are going to shop for your dress. It is never too early to start dress shopping, and there is the convenience of online shopping if you don’t want to go to a physical store.
Also, go to bridal fairs if you have the time. Your perfect wedding dress might be waiting for you there.
To conclude, times have changed. Modern women are more aware of what they want and going for it. If you are planning a wedding this year, be bold and choose a dress that is you. You now have the information you need to help you make the best choice.
Here to celebrate you!
